A Canadian family with twin 7 year old boys live on board a private residential cruise ship. Their intention is to move to a new home (location to be confirmed) in early 2026 and for the boys to enrol in a local school. We are looking for someone to join them as they travel to prepare the boys for their transition to school, and to provide a rewarding, inspirational educational experience for their remaining time on board.
We are looking for the right candidate to start as soon as possible, with the intention of the role lasting until at least the end of January 2026, possibly February or March.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The teacher will have suitable experience and expertise teaching 7-8 year old students, ideally both in a school setting and as a private teacher.
The teacher will assess the boys’ current position relative to where they will need to be when they start school. They will then be responsible for designing and implementing an appropriate programme of study that works towards getting the boys to “school ready” status in an engaging and stimulating manner that allows them to satisfy their intellectual curiosity. The intention is that the students are provided with a supportive, encouraging learning experience as well as an effective one. The current understanding is that they are relatively advanced readers, with their numeracy skills needing some work.
As well as any academic objectives, the teacher will have a more general responsibility to help the parents to raise the children to be safe, kind, diligent, curious, wise and polite, in an environment where common sense prevails. The boys are being raised to value experience over material goods, and particularly to value travel experiences.
There are potentially some challenges involving executive function, speed of working, being overly self critical and so on. Work on these areas to ease the transition into a school environment will be expected.
The teacher will be expected to plan and lead activities outside the classroom with the children. Particularly when in port as visiting local attractions, doing land based activities etc is an important component of their education. During these, and at all other times, the teacher will have an important duty of care to ensure that any risks have been considered and minimised, and that the children are not put in harm’s way.
Full records of all teaching and learning activities and progress must be kept up to date.
The teachers must not smoke or vape, should be apolitical, tolerant and respectful towards others.
HOURS AND HOLIDAYS:
This is a full-time position. The expectation is that the teachers will follow a full-time schedule; 5-6 days per week and between 40 and 60 hours per week. Flexibility and a “can do” attitude are expected from the teacher in order to facilitate educational enrichment activities.
The teacher will be entitled to reasonable holidays to be arranged to fit in with the family schedule.
ACCOMODATION, TRAVEL AND MISCELLANEOUS:
When the family are on board the tutor will be provided with their own apartment and a monthly meal allowance which can be used in any of the restaurants.. They will also be entitled to take advantage of the many facilities, including free gym and personal training, discounted spa services, house-keeping services and more. The tutor will be provided with an international US-based SIM as part of the family plan.
When the family are on shore the tutor will be provided with a hotel room or a private bedroom in a rented property. Meals or a meal allowance will be provided.
There are some light child care responsibilities – for example when the parents are out for the evening the tutor will be expected to wait in the family apartment to look after the children.
Health insurance will be provided.
