A skilled, experienced teacher is required to provide after-school tutoring and weekend support for a bright, motivated 15 year old girl. The family lives in Austin, Texas and the tutor will be expected to live near-by. There is also the opportunity to travel with the family occasionally or continue support online. The girl currently attends a private middle school and will be moving up to high school in August 2025.
STUDENT
The student is a bright 15 year old girl. She has a mature, studious approach to her education having developed good study habits and organisational skills with her family. She has an active, enquiring approach to her learning, whilst possibly being more introspective and reflective in larger group settings. She displays strong scholastic potential and will thrive with a tutor that inspires her academically as well as offering structured support where needed.
The student has some hearing loss in one ear and can find some non-verbal and visuospatial reasoning challenging. She enjoys project based studies which she can approach with full diligence given sufficient time. She has proved very capable when faced with knowledge based testing, achieving excellent grades.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The tutor will be an outstanding educator with suitable experience and expertise teaching students of the appropriate age range. They should be very comfortable delivering a wide range of subjects.
The tutor will be required to support the student’s learning on a daily basis after school. They will assist with ensuring a full grasp of current syllabus materials as well as adding breadth and depth to the school curriculum. The student will be focussed on Algebra, Physics, World History and English in the coming school year and the tutor should be completely comfortable supporting these subjects. The student will also continue her Latin studies, and have one fine arts elective.
The tutor will further plan to assist the student in improving her non-verbal reasoning skills and visuospatial processing. Appropriate activities, projects and puzzles should be identified and utilised to maintain and improve academic attainment. The tutor will also focus on developing more complete responses to essay type questions, where interpretation and synthesis skills are more evident.
The successful candidate will be well organised, bringing structure and clarity to the daily routine. They will possess a patient demeanour and a sense of humour when needed, whilst having the tenacity to keep the broader goals in mind.
The role is broader than just teaching – there is a large mentoring element to it as well. The tutor is expected to engage with the student to encourage recreation and leisure activities alongside the more formal lessons, assisting her general development and journey into a fulfilled adult life.
The tutor will be expected to work two half-days on the weekends. This can be an opportunity to add context to the student’s studies, occasionally using trips and excursions to highlight real world connections to her learning experiences.
The tutor will need to be comfortable and experienced supporting the student online if they chose to remain in Austin whilst the family travels.
The ability to teach Latin would be advantageous.
Success for this role would be an engaged and supportive educator who works alongside the student to ensure understanding of the school subjects, meeting the student where she is in her education, and working to ensure the student maximizes her potential academically whilst also encouraging her to find her passions outside of academics. The family expects successful completion of high school with grades and SAT scores that gain entrance into good universities.
HOURS AND HOLIDAYS
This is a full-time position with up to 40 hours per week of time available. The tutor will work with the student for 2-4 hours after school as needed and for two half-days at the weekend. The tutor may have the option to travel with the family occasionally if support is required at these times. If they choose to remain in Austin, they will be expected to provide online support. The tutor will be entitled to 90 days of paid holiday per year (the summer break and Christmas/New Year).
ACCOMMODATION AND TRAVEL
An accommodation stipend may be available to assist in relocation.
A car will be made available for the tutor’s use.
Any costs and accommodation associated with travelling with the family will be covered by the client.
