New York: July-December
This job has been filled.
A US family, with an 8th Grade daughter, has had home school tutors from Beacon for the last two years as they have split their time between various locations in Europe and the USA. We now require a tutor for July and then September to December in New York City.
The teaching across all subjects, except English is to be delivered in Spanish, so native Spanish fluency is required.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Beacon has provided tutors for the last two school years who have been working with the girl following a bespoke curriculum based on a hybrid of the UK and the PYP systems. It is anticipated that a similar approach will be taken. Opportunities for adding depth and breadth to this will be actively followed, particularly in the STEM subjects.
The teacher will have suitable experience and expertise teaching students of the appropriate age.
Fluent Spanish language skills are essential. All subjects apart from English are to be taught in Spanish. The girl is not a native Spanish speaker, but has been learning for several years and has spent two years in an immersive Spanish learning environment with her native Spanish speaking tutors.
The teacher will be required to design and deliver an appropriate broad spectrum curriculum that engages the girl and allows her to satisfy her intellectual curiosity. The intention is that the student is provided with a supportive, encouraging learning experience as well as an effective one. The teacher should design assessment and feedback mechanisms that encourage learning and develop lifelong learning skills. The successful candidate will be inspirational in their delivery and act as role models in their conduct.
All educational and regulatory requirements should be fully understood and complied with. This is to include annual standardised testing to comply with the regulations of the home schooling authorities in Florida, where she is registered home school student.
Full records of all teaching and learning activities and progress must be kept up to date. This is to include regular testing and monitoring of attainment against expected targets for her grade level.
The teachers must not smoke or vape, should be apolitical, tolerant and respectful towards others.
HOURS AND HOLIDAYS:
This is a full-time position. The expectation is that the teachers will follow a full-time schedule; 5 days per week, 9-5. Some flexibility to allow for other commitments of the teacher could be accommodated.
Teaching time will not fill the whole of this time as that would not be practical for the student, but they will be available if required. Flexibility and a “can do” attitude are expected from the teacher in order to facilitate educational enrichment activities.
The role will comprise two sections:
July 1-31: Ideally in person in New York. If this is not possible then online would be considered.
Sep 1 – Dec 19: In person in New York at the family home.
A tutor will also be required for the period from January – June, but the location is not yet known; it could be in Europe or the USA. For the right person, with the required right to live in the chosen destination, a contract extension to cover this period could be available.
ACCOMMODATION, TRAVEL AND MISCELLANEOUS:
There will not be any accommodation or transportation provided as part of this role. The expectation is that the teacher will live within reasonable daily travelling distance of the clients home. If the tutor needs to relocate they will be expected to cover their own accommodation costs.
