We are looking for an experienced private educator to provide a full-time homeschool education for a 7 year old boy as his family travel between Cascais, near Lisbon, Portugal, Mexico City and London, with some additional trips possible.
The role will run from mid-January until the end of March 2026.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The student is a sweet, imaginative and confident little boy who thrives when learning feels joyful, active and meaningful.
A project-based, hands-on approach that makes learning playful and adventurous is required that will provide a broad and enriching education that goes far beyond the classroom – introducing him to new topics, ideas and ways of thinking.
The family lives in Cascais, about 30 minutes from Lisbon, Portugal, which is where the role will start on 12th of January. The current plan in that on 28th of January they will travel to Mexico City, via a few days in London. They will stay there until 22nd of March, with a 3 day trip to Pittsburgh during this time. The last week of March would be in either London or Cascais. The opportunities available as the family travels are to be welcomed and incorporated into the boy’s education. The teacher must be able to draw from geography, history, culture, and local experiences to bring education to life. This is particularly true whilst in Mexico City as this is an ideal opportunity for a project based learning opportunity.
Outdoor learning is a core element for him. He currently has his own vegetable garden and thrives in nature-based settings like forest schools and beaches.
The teacher should prioritize emotional intelligence and well-being and combine social and entrepreneurial focused social development equally alongside academic progress – have a thorough knowledge of KS1 and 2 and be skilled in nurturing social and emotional learning to promote the student’s holistic growth.
As well as the traditional subject areas, the teacher should be comfortable with the integration of digital literacy, AI tools, robotics and coding, using technology creatively to prepare him for the future.
He has an active life “outside school”, including surfing, skating, swimming, etc. The teacher will be expected to coordinate with any other teachers to keep him active, social and well-rounded.
The student has a visual impairment; therefore, the teacher must show awareness, flexibility, and forward-thinking by consistently adapting learning materials and approaches. When resources are made accessible through assistive technology and enlargement, the student is able to confidently and independently access all areas of learning.
This is not a traditional teaching role. It’s a mentorship – the chance to support the student academically, emotionally and socially, with warmth, humor and creativity, with a strong emphasis on resilience.
There is not a pre-defined curriculum. The teacher would be expected to devise a program of study using whatever resources are best suited to the situation.
The successful candidate will be inspirational in their delivery and act as a role model in their conduct.
The teachers must not smoke or vape, should be apolitical, tolerant and respectful towards others.
HOURS AND HOLIDAYS
This is a full-time position. The expectation is that the teacher will devise and follow a structured timetable. Flexibility and a “can do” attitude are expected from the teacher with an expectation of normally around 40 hours per week of instructional time, with planning and preparation in addition. It is likely that the teacher will work with the student 8:30-4:30, 5 days per week, although this may be adjusted to fit in with travel plans etc.
