OVERVIEW
An exceptional humanities-focussed tutor is required to join a full-time homeschool environment for three young boys aged 11, 9 and 7. The role will start as soon as possible and last at least one academic year, with a view to becoming a more long-term role. The position will be based mainly in Montana with time also spent in Hawaii plus other adventurous travel.
STUDENTS
The three students have been in a professional homeschool environment since Jan 2019. They have been following a custom designed immersive curriculum, creating as much crossover between different subjects as possible, with a focus on creating real depth of knowledge and developing conceptual understanding and critical thinking skills. This bespoke curriculum meets the requirements of California, Montana and UK syllabi in the fundamentals, while stretching the boys way beyond their ages where possible and working hard to develop their creative skills as well as academic prowess. Their learning is localised to the different locations that the family travel to, in order to provide an immersive educational experience.
The eldest boy has some special educational needs and was struggling before starting his homeschool journey. In the last few years he has come on in leaps and bounds but a teacher with experience of students with SEN is a must. The tutor must also have the ability to adapt their lesson plans very quickly in response to how well the students are responding and pivot accordingly.
The boys all enjoy their schooling and are engaged across the board. They are active children, taking part in skiing, surfing, mountain biking and fishing as well as various sports and games with their tutors.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The current teacher leads the boys’ education, primarily focussing on the Sciences, Math, Latin, Art and Music. An additional teacher is required to work with him. They must have a deep love of English Language, Literature, Philosophy and History, with additional wider interests, and be able to collaborate on other subjects. Fluency in a modern language, especially Spanish, would be a bonus.
The family are all extremely outdoor-oriented adventure-seekers and it is essential that the tutor fits into this culture. Given the long winters in Montana, a love of snow-sports is essential and the role will suit an adventurous soul with a love of nature, the great outdoors and other adventurous sports such as surfing and mountain biking.
As is to be expected in a classroom of three brothers, there can be a lot of energy flying around and the tutor will need to match this energy at times, balancing a sense of fun while also instilling some discipline in the three young men. This role encompasses more than simple tutoring, with the teachers acting in a mentor role that is deeply ingrained in the boys’ upbringing.
The teacher will need to be flexible, responsive and ready to adapt to rapid changes in schedule and location.
There is a fully featured classroom in Montana, and a smaller equivalent in Hawaii. The teacher will be involved in ensuring that resources are ordered as required and that everything is ready for lessons.
HOURS AND HOLIDAYS:
This is a full-time position. The teacher will work with the students for an average of 40 hours per week, with planning and preparation to be carried out in addition. Flexibility and a “can do” attitude are expected from the teacher in order to facilitate educational enrichment activities and to fit in with the family’s lifestyle and travel.
The teacher will be entitled to 29 days holiday per year, to be taken at times convenient to the client.
ACCOMODATION, TRAVEL AND MISCELLANEOUS:
In both Montana and Hawaii the teacher will live in a house within a short distance of the client’s family home. This is a shared property with the current teacher and another family employee.
A car will be provided. The teacher must be a confident driver, including in wintery conditions.
The teacher will be expected to travel with the family between Montana, Hawaii, and other destinations, including internationally. The client will provide suitable, self-contained accommodation for the teacher at all locations they are required to work. All travel expenses will be covered by the client.
The teacher must have the right to live and work in the USA. We cannot provide a work visa.
A stipend may be available to provide medical insurance for the right candidate.
