HOURS: Full-time
START: September 2025 and January 2026
DURATION: until mid December and mid June

A US family, with a 7th Grade daughter,  is splitting their time between New York and Rome, Italy.  A tutor (or tutors)  is  required to keep her on track with, and ideally ahead of, her grade level,  particularly in STEM subjects.

The teaching across all subjects, except English is to be delivered in Spanish, so native Spanish fluency is required.

The current location plan is::

  • New York: September – mid December (mornings only)
  • Rome: mid January – mid June

We are either looking for separate tutors in each location, or possibly one person to cover both periods.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Beacon have provided a tutor for the current school year who has been working with the girl following a bespoke curriculum based on a hybrid of the UK and the PYP systems.  It is anticipated that a similar approach will be taken. Opportunities for adding depth and breadth to this will be actively followed, particularly in the STEM subjects.

The teacher will have suitable experience and expertise teaching students of the appropriate age.

The teacher will be expected to be able to provide an enhanced learning experience based on the locations, including topics and activities that take advantage of local culture, geography, history, nature etc.

Options for home school community groups in each location as well as other more general opportunities for social and sports interaction, particularly volleyball and athletics., will be explored to allow the student to get as much from this opportunity in as many ways as possible.

Fluent Spanish language skills are essential.  All subjects apart from English are to be taught in Spanish.  The girl is not a native Spanish speaker, but has been learning for several years and has spent the current year in an immersive Spanish learning environment with her native Spanish tutor.

The teacher will be required to design and deliver an appropriate broad spectrum curriculum that engages the girl and allows her  to satisfy her intellectual curiosity.  The intention is that the student is provided with a supportive, encouraging learning experience as well as an effective one. The teacher should design assessment and feedback mechanisms that encourage learning and develop lifelong learning skills. The successful candidate will be inspirational in their delivery and act as role models in their conduct.

All educational and regulatory requirements should be fully understood and complied with.  This is to include annual standardised testing to comply with the regulations of the home schooling authorities in Florida.

Full records of all teaching and learning activities and progress must be kept up to date.  This is to include regular testing and monitoring of attainment against expected targets for her grade level.

The teachers must not smoke or vape, should be apolitical, tolerant and respectful towards others.

HOURS AND HOLIDAYS

New York: Sep – Dec.  The teacher will work with the student usually just in the mornings, perhaps 9am-1pm.  Some flexibility is expected, but generally the teacher will just be responsible for the “school” part of the job, with activities and “extra-curricular” aspects being provided by others.  This means that there will be the possibility of doing other work, or having personal time in the afternoons.

Rome: Jan – Jun. This is a full-time position.  The expectation is that the teachers will follow a full-time schedule; 5 days per week, 9-5.  Some flexibility to allow for other commitments of the teacher could be accommodated.

Teaching time will not fill the whole of this time as that would not be practical for the student, but they will be available if required. Flexibility and a “can do” attitude are expected from the teacher in order to facilitate educational enrichment activities.

The role will comprise two sections: the dates are not firmly fixed yet, but expected to be Sep 8 – Dec 19 and Jan 12 – Jun 19.  If one person is appointed for both parts of the role they will not be paid during the mid Dec – mid Jan break.

ACCOMMODATION, TRAVEL AND MISCELLANEOUS

There will not be any accommodation or transportation provided as part of this role.  The expectation is that the  teacher will  live within reasonable daily travelling distance of the clients homes. If the tutor needs to relocate they will be expected to cover their own accommodation costs.
