We are looking for an experienced private educator to provide a full-time homeschool education for three children in Puerto Rico.
The family are looking for an academically rigorous, inspirational, engaging education for their children, aged 12, 11 and 9.
The children previously attended highly regarded, academically rigorous schools and the family is committed to continuing that same level of educational excellence at home.
JOB DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a talented, passionate teacher who can design and deliver a customized, intellectually stimulating curriculum that is both broad and deep. The long-term plan for each child’s educational path is still evolving, with the possibilities ranging anywhere from continued private teacher education to boarding school. This role is focused on maintaining strong academic foundations, critical thinking, and a love of learning. The ideal candidate will be inspiring, organized, and adaptable, with a genuine passion for education and child development.
The oldest boy is 12 years old and will be starting Grade 7 in September. He is highly intelligent with a strong aptitude for math and science. He has ADHD (medicated) and although he excels academically, he does face challenges with executive functioning and organization. The ideal teacher will have experience supporting students with similar challenges and will be able to help him develop and practice effective strategies for success. He also needs targeted support in writing, especially creative and analytical writing skills.
The 11 year old girl, entering Grade 5, is also advanced in math and science. She is a high-achieving student with a love for reading and natural talent in writing. She is highly motivated, focused, and performs above grade level across subjects, especially in math and science.
Her sister is 9. She is entering Grade 2 in September, but arguably should be Grade 3. She is academically advanced and eager to be challenged. She has consistently exceeded grade-level expectations and thrives in a fast-paced, engaging environment that nurtures curiosity and independent thought.
The youngest boy is 6. He will not be a primary focus for this role. A local kindergarten teacher is expected to take the lead with him, although occasional integration into lessons or group activities may be appropriate.
There is not a pre-defined curriculum. The current school has offered to provide theirs as a foundation, but it is not essential that this is followed. The teacher would be expected to devise a program of study for each student using whatever resources are best suited to their needs. The principal objective is that each receive a broad, deep, rigorous education, with the secondary target that they continue to be at their grade level so that they could slot back into a mainstream school in the future if required.
This is principally a pure teaching role. The children all do many extra-curricular activities, which are managed and facilitated by their mother. There is a nanny in the household as well, so the teacher will not have any additional child care responsibilities.
Full records of all teaching and learning activities and progress must be kept up to date. Communication with the parents is vital, particularly regarding goals, progress, and evolving needs of the children.
The teacher must be willing and able to travel with the family if required, including internationally.
The successful candidate will be inspirational in their delivery and act as a role model in their conduct.
The teachers must not smoke or vape, should be apolitical, tolerant and respectful towards others.
HOURS AND HOLIDAYS
This is a full-time position. The expectation is that the teacher will devise and follow a structured timetable, fitting in with the students needs. Flexibility and a “can do” attitude are expected from the teacher with an expectation of normally around 40 hours per week of instructional time, with planning and preparation in addition.
A structured weekly schedule will be created in collaboration with the family and should be designed to meet the students’ individual needs. Instruction will typically take place Monday through Friday, with weekends off, though some flexibility may be required depending on family travel or scheduling needs.
The teacher will be entitled to 45 days of holiday per year, to be taken at times as agreed with the family.
ACCOMMODATION, TRAVEL AND MISCELLANEOUS
Furnished accommodation or accommodation allowance will be provided within a reasonable commuting distance of the family’s home in Dorado, Puerto Rico.
If needed, a car will be made available for the teacher’s use. The teacher must have a clean driving record and be insurable.
The teacher must be willing and able to travel with the family, including internationally, when required. All travel-related expenses will be covered.
The teacher must have the right to live and work in the USA. We cannot provide a visa or green card for this role.
