Experienced private educator to provide a full-time homeschool education for two children in Puerto Rico required.

The family are looking for an academically rigorous, inspirational, engaging education for their two children, aged 12 and 14.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The family are from Texas, and have moved to Puerto Rico relatively recently.  They have some concerns about the local school programs and so are exploring the possibility of full-time homeschool to take their children through to the university application stage with an academically strong foundation and a love of learning for its own sake, built on their secure family values.

The oldest child is a girl of 14.  She enjoys all of her school subjects and is doing well across the board.  She particularly enjoys reading, having recently started on some of the classics.  Outside school she takes part in lots of physical activity, with a particular interest in water sports including kitesurfing.

Her younger brother is 12.  He enjoys, and is good at, math and science, the STEM subjects more widely, and has an analytical problem solving mind.  He is not very engaged by reading, although he has recently gained an interest in some narrative driven novels.  His hand writing skills do need to be improved, along with his more general fine motor skills.  He also enjoys many sports and outdoor activities, both formally and casually with his friendship group. He benefits from being allowed unstructured time to reduce any anxiety about external pressures.

The intention is that a rigorous and wide ranging program of study is designed to address the learning needs of both children.  This will have aspects of collaborative work, but is likely to be principally delivered on an individual basis.

The content of the curriculum is not yet defined, and it is expected that the teacher will have significant input into formulating these plans.  The curriculum followed is likely to be similar to the classical Christian education provided by Veritas (https://veritaspress.com/). Consideration of accreditation and validity with respect to university applications will be important, as well as the more general academic breadth and depth.

We are looking for a teacher with an outstanding personal academic record and a history of success working as a full curriculum private teacher. The ideal candidate will be comfortable teaching all subjects to high school level including math, science, technology, English, literature, and the humanities. It is extremely important that they are able to innovate, to facilitate opportunities, to maintain rigour, and most importantly to inspire.

It is essential that the teacher has a personality and teaching style that complements the children’s active, energetic, and gregarious nature.   We are looking for someone with the energy and sense of humor to keep them engaged and inspired.  The teacher must be able to adapt their plans and respond to changing moods to allow the children to get the most out of their time.  They should be able to take advantage of the opportunities presented by homeschooling and by the location to provide a truly exceptional education experience.  This could, for example, include regular work outside, field trips, and long term projects.

Full records of all teaching and learning activities and progress must be kept up to date.

The teacher must be willing and able to travel with the family if required, including internationally.

The successful candidate will be inspirational in their delivery and act as a role model in their conduct.

The teachers must not smoke or vape, should be apolitical, tolerant and respectful towards others.

HOURS AND HOLIDAYS

This is a full-time position.  The expectation is that the teacher will follow a flexible timetable, fitting in with the students needs.   Flexibility and a “can do” attitude are expected from the teacher with an expectation of normally around 40 hours per week. Teaching will typically take place on Monday – Friday with weekends off, but this may change from time to time.

The teacher will be entitled to 45 days of holiday per year, to be taken at times convenient to the client.

ACCOMODATION, TRAVEL AND MISCELLANEOUS

Accommodation will be provided within a reasonable travelling distance of the family home.

If required, a car will be provided.
