A British family with a 7 year old boy spend 8-9 months per year on board a private residential ship, with the remainder split between their homes in the USA, UK and other travel. We are looking for someone to provide a rigorous, rewarding, and inspirational education for their son.
We are looking for the right candidate to start as soon as practical, with the intention of the role potentially lasting for several years.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The teacher will have suitable experience and expertise teaching primary school aged children, ideally both in a school setting and as a private teacher.
The student is a polite, fun-loving and intelligent young boy. He enjoys spending time with other people and is quick to engage in conversation. He is quick to develop a keen interest in new topics and to find out all he can about them. He is learning Japanese, and how to play the piano (Grade 2). He is enjoying riding his bike, swimming, taking photos and playing golf and chess.
He is a bright boy, currently finishing off Year 3 level of the British curriculum in all subjects. The tutor will be responsible for designing and implementing an appropriate programme of study that works towards the twin goals of keeping him on track or slightly ahead of his year group level across the board, and that also gives a much broader educational experience than he would get in school, introducing different topics or methods of learning.
The changing location of the ship should be used as an educational resource. The itinerary is known approximately three years in advance, and the family will plan when to be on or off board based upon this. This means that the tutor will have plenty of notice to allow them to prepare learning objectives and activities that will take advantage of the environment, geography, history, culture etc of the places that are visited.
The teacher will be expected to plan and lead activities outside the classroom, particularly when in port as visiting local attractions, doing land based activities etc is an important component of education. During these, and at all other times, the teacher will have an important duty of care to ensure that any risks have been considered and minimised, and that he is not put in harm’s way.
As well as the academic objectives, the teacher will have a more general responsibility to act as a role model and mentor
Full records of all teaching and learning activities and progress must be kept up to date.
The teacher must not smoke or vape, should be apolitical, tolerant and respectful towards others. They should have an up to date First Aid certificate, and a recent DBS check. Beacon will facilitate both of these if necessary.
HOURS AND HOLIDAYS
This is a full-time position. The expectation is that the teacher will normally work with the student for 4-5 hours per day, 6 days per week. This is not fixed though, particularly during periods of travel between locations and when involved in projects or activities that necessarily take longer. A general flexibility and “can do” attitude are expected from the teacher.
The teacher will be entitled to 40 days holiday per year to be arranged to fit in with the family schedule.
ACCOMMODATION, TRAVEL AND MISCELLANEOUS
When the family are on board the tutor will be provided with their own studio apartment with a balcony and a monthly meal allowance which can be used in any of the restaurants. They will also be entitled to take advantage of the many facilities, including access to the gym, house-keeping services etc.
When the family are on shore, the tutor will be provided private accommodation at one of the family’s residences or hotel accommodation when traveling. Meals or a meal allowance will be provided.
There are some light child care responsibilities – for example when the parents are out for the evening the tutor will be expected to wait in the family apartment to look after the boy.
