A skilled, experienced middle school teacher is required to provide a 14 year old boy with a broad curriculum education whilst travelling the world on an 80 ft motor yacht. The teacher will be expected to deliver the full range of age-appropriate subjects, with an emphasis on STEM subjects. The successful candidate will be warm hearted, engaging and a great communicator, with a love of travel and adventure. They must also have experience living aboard a boat and a good working knowledge of seamanship.
This position will be mainly based on board as the family travels the world, with some time spent in South Carolina and with the option to work remotely for some of the time to fit in with the client’s itinerary.
STUDENT
The 14 year old student is currently enrolled in an academically rigorous private school and is performing very well, exceeding his peers in STEM subjects. He enjoys being out in nature, camping, hiking, various watersports, chess, coding, engineering, and science.
He comes from a very supportive and engaged family, with parents who are actively involved in his development and who aim to give him a meaningful life changing experience during their global travels; one that will serve him well as he progresses toward his higher learning goals.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The tutor will be responsible for designing and implementing a suitable curriculum to be delivered while living aboard the boat, a custom designed 80 ft motor yacht, and/or travelling internationally over a 12-24 month period, beginning Aug/Sept 2023. The ideal candidate must be able to provide a supportive, compassionate learning environment with a hands-on approach to creative learning, and one that helps coach him to find solutions that make learning fun.
Math, STEM, and sciences are particularly important, but the teacher should be able to teach all subjects through high school level. The teacher will establish measurable short- and long-term targets for the child’s educational goals, and monitor progress towards them. They will maintain comprehensive records of progress and attainment to allow for a straightforward transition back into the school system, if and when required, and for easy assessment of progress by the parents and state authorities of residence.
The position is much broader than just teaching – there is a mentoring and caring element to it as well. The tutor will be expected to engage with the student during adventure and sightseeing activities while visiting various ports of call. Opportunities should be sought for him to meet and interact with other children whilst visiting different countries throughout the journey.
The tutor will be spending a large amount of time with the whole family so it is essential that they are fun to be around, easy going, communicative and adaptable to help to make this experience enjoyable for everyone on board.
There will normally be just four people; the parents, the student, and the tutor in the relatively limited confines of the boat. The importance of the tutor being able to fit in with this family dynamic cannot be overstated. The tutor will be expected to become an integral part of the family team, contributing as needed with boat chores, including crewing and helping in the galley. Experience of motor cruising, including living aboard, is very important.
There may be periods when it makes sense for the tutor to leave the family and to teach remotely. The boat is fitted with a satellite internet access system to enable this to take place.
HOURS AND HOLIDAYS
The majority of this role will involve integration into the family unit on board, and consequently it is difficult to specify expected hours in a meaningful way. The tutor and the family will work out a routine that works for the education and crewing aspects, as well as for everyone’s general wellbeing.
The teacher will be entitled to 45 days holiday per year, to be taken at times convenient to the client.
ACCOMMODATION AND TRAVEL
The tutor will have their own cabin on the boat.
When staying anywhere else with the family the client will provide accommodation for the tutor.
All costs associated with travel will be covered by the client.
